Winter 2006 Seasonal Outlook for Grains/Oilseeds With Rich Feltes

Feb 02, 2006 12:00 p.m. CST

Rich Feltes, Vice President and Director of Research at Man Global Research, presents his outlook for the grain and oilseeds markets at mid-winter. He outlined the positive and negative factors ahead for the 2006/2007 crop, and felt the positives slightly outweighed the negatives. Bullish influences on the market include continued fund money flowing into commodity markets in general, as well as surging energy demand that has lifted prospects for ethanol and bio-diesel. Rich said capital has flowed into commodities partly because of historically above-average returns, and as an easy way to invest in China, a commodity-intensive economy. While this inflow has influenced price action, he said ultimately supply and demand will drive the markets. Rich discussed fundamental factors traders should watch going forward, including weather and Asian demand, and current expectations. He also offered a number of specific trade recommendations from Man Global Research.

Market Outlook 2006 With Jim Wyckoff

Dec 06, 2005 12:00 p.m. CST

Jim Wyckoff, Proprietor of the "Jim Wyckoff on the Markets" analytical, educational and trading advisory service, gave his long-term outlook for a variety of futures markets, taking a technical focus. He's bullish on metals and said gold is likely to trade above $500 an ounce into year-end. He is likewise bullish on the Continuous Commodity Index, formerly called the CRB Index, amid a strong possibility more speculative money will flow into commodities.

Turning to crude oil, Jim said there are clues a major top is in place, and fresh highs might be hard to come by. In the stock indexes, Jim said things are "looking brighter" for stock index bulls into year-end, although 2006 may be choppy. He also gave his outlook for a variety of other commodity and financial futures markets, from orange juice to the euro to cotton.

Jim concluded his presentation with an overview of some shorter-term technical tools for traders, including: congestion areas, collapse in volatility, buying exhaustion tails, diamond patterns, and 40-day moving averages. He also discussed daily "market noise" and how to stay focused on the bigger picture.

Winter Outlook for Precious Metals With James Steel

Nov 23, 2005 12:00 p.m. CST

James Steel, Assistant Vice President and Senior Energies and Metals Analyst at Refco Global Research, gives his winter outlook for the metals markets. He called gold a "bumpy bull market" that has broken to 17-year highs, but still faces "compelling fundamentals" for continued gains. He discussed the impact of hedging, central bank policies, the relationship between gold and the U.S. dollar, and gold's dual role as a commodity and as a currency in the global economy. Silver likewise has been in a bull market, supported by a strong world economy. James gives his upside price targets for both gold and silver over the next few months. Turning to platinum, he discussed fundamentals unique to this market. James said supply and demand are roughly in balance but the difference is enough to favor a bullish stance given a "wafer thin" supply situation. He recommended buying this market on a break to near $950.

Advantages of Interest Rate Futures vs. Financial Equities With Nick Kalivas

Oct 19, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

Nick concluded the third in a series of three webinars comparing how futures can be more favorable vehicles for many investors than equity instruments. He summarized general aspects of using futures such as tax advantages, capital efficiency, and leverage. And in this webinar, Nick focused on financial companies, such as banks and brokerage firms, and how they are subject to fundamentals that also impact financial futures contacts such as Treasury notes or Eurodollars. He said traders trying to play macroeconomic trends are better off using futures because they have a more direct impact on price direction. Futures traders don't need to worry about company-specific events that might affect a particular stock, independent of economic fundamentals. He discussed the impact of rising and falling interest rates on financial shares, financial exchange-traded funds, and futures.

Advantages of Metal Futures vs. Metal Stocks With Nick Kalivas

Oct 12, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

The profit outlooks for many metals companies are influenced by fundamental factors which are tradable and realized in the futures market. Gold, silver, aluminum and copper prices influence the metals companies traded in the equity market. So why not just trade metal futures directly? Explore the benefits of trading metal futures with Nick Kalivas, Vice President, Financial Research and Senior Equity Analyst with Refco Global Research. Futures offer a direct exposure to underlying macroeconomic themes, you can go long or short with ease, and company-specific events that affect cash stock prices don't matter when trading futures. There are also potential tax advantages to trading futures. Nick discusses reasons why the underlying commodity price direction may not parallel the share price of metals companies such as Newmont Mining or Alcoa, and why he thinks you should consider trading your thoughts on the direction of metals prices using futures markets instead of equities.

The Fear of Missing Out With Doug Hirschhorn

Aug 16, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

Doug Hirschhorn, CEO of Edge Consulting, tackles a common fear that thwarts many traders - the fear of missing out. The fear of missing out on an opportunity is typically even greater than the fear of losing money while stuck in a bad trade, even though it tends to lead to that exact result. Traders beat themselves up for not being in the market when they feel they should be, and that can lead to overtrading, lack of discipline, and escalating losses.

Doug discusses techniques to help you overcome this fear, which separates the losers from champions. "Champions are the ones who manage to stay focused under pressure. They get fear just like anyone else...but they are able to separate that fear response," he said. Some of his advice? Catch yourself; stop yourself in that moment when negative talk and fear takes over.

Learn more about how you might recognize and overcome your fears in this inspiring webinar with Doug Hirschhorn.

Second Half 2005 Hog Outlook With Jack Weaver

Jul 14, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

Tom first gave an overview of the CME's growth in commodities trading this year, and discussed features of the electronic livestock, or e-livestock, market. The CME offers electronic trading in live cattle, feeder cattle, and lean hogs on its Globex platform. They are traded side-by-side with the open-outcry contracts and are completely fungible with those contracts.

Jack then took a look at fundamental factors in the hog market and gave RGR's production estimates. He offered some price targets for this market, and said near-term resistance at current levels is in the low $70s. Prices were seen then moving lower to the mid to upper $50s range by October, and even into the $40s. Watch demand, watch surprises in hog supplies, and watch packer margin management, he said.

Summer 2005 Outlook for Softs/Metals With James Steel

Jun 16, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

Get a fundamental feel for factors impacting softs and metals and how you might position yourself to trade these markets with James Steel, Director of new York Research at Refco Global Research. James first discussed gold market fundamentals, including the historical correlation between gold and the U.S. dollar. Interestingly, gold and the dollar have both rallied together in the past few weeks; typically the two have an inverse relationship. James says what he feels this means, and gives his outlook for the dollar and gold as the year progresses. He said the dollar will likely be vulnerable to declines, and if so, gold is likely to reestablish a bullish trend. Strong physical demand and geopolitical tensions are supporting factors for a revisit to highs seen earlier this year.

In silver, James said the market is starting to respond to higher prices with increased production, although not to a huge degree. He felt silver is historically high and may meet resistance around $8. James said he would consider selling above that level, and said he doesn't favor buying unless it breaks below $6.90.

Turning to softs, James gave his overview of fundamental factors affecting cocoa, sugar and coffee, and what he sees going on in these markets moving forward. View the webinar for further details on these and other market trends in the coming months.

Summer 2005 Outlook for Grains and Oilseeds With James Barnett

Jun 02, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

James Barnett, Senior Grain/Oilseed Analyst at Refco Global Research, gives his outlook for the grain and oilseeds markets this coming summer. He discusses the impact of possible weather factors, as well as import and export and production forecasts.

Wheat: Barnett discusses potentially bullish factors, but discounted most as unlikely and notes demand has been weakening. He expects wheat to be under pressure amid a confluence of factors moving forward, and sees prices below $3 possible in July KCBT wheat at harvest.

Corn: There are several factors pointing toward a bearish outlook, said Barnett. USDA has been overestimating demand, corn ending stocks are projected to be high, and yields have been consistent in the past few years. However, Barnett outlines a few potentially bullish factors, including an historical tendency for the market to see a late-summer rally that could prompt a bounce. He targets $1.90 for December CBOT corn at harvest.

Soybeans: Poor crops out of Brazil amid increasing demand makes this market outlook more bullish, said Barnett. USDA has been underestimating demand, he said, and yields have been erratic. November soybeans have in the past also seen a summer rally in mid-to-late June and July as weather issues crop up. He said technical charts show an upside breakout likely with a price target of $7.15 and possibly up to $7.80; he recommends traders look to buy on breaks.

Spring Outlook for Financial Futures With Mike Malpede, Tom Pawlicki & Lara Akin

May 26, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

Join three outstanding Refco Global Research analysts for their outlook on financial markets in the coming months. Hear more of their views on stocks, interest rates and the dollar from technical and fundamental perspectives in this timely event.

Tom Pawlicki gave his technical outlook for Treasury bonds, the S&P 500 and the U.S. dollar. He said current chart patterns show all three looking positive and gave his summer and year-end targets.

Mike Malpede agreed the short-term outlook for the U.S. dollar appeared bullish, given a recent breakout from technical resistance and supportive fundamental factors such as strengthening U.S. growth, a measured pace of rate increases from the Federal Reserve and a surprise improvement in the U.S. budget and trade balance. However, he outlined some risks that are likely to result in a longer-term bearish trend. He offered a trading idea in September dollar index futures, including an entry point and price objective.

Lara Akin turned to factors affecting the interest rate markets, particularly the Fed. She sees the federal funds rate at 3.75% to 4.0% by year-end, with a possibility it could be even higher. She advised investors to listen closely to what the Fed says in coming months for clues. Lara said she's bearish bond prices long term, but said there's a little room for a "trading market" and more favorable near-term outlook.

Advantages of Stock Index Futures Over ETFs With Nick Kalivas

May 10, 2005 12:00 p.m. CDT

Many investors looking for broad exposure to the equity markets are familiar with Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) but haven't considered stock index futures. Nick Kalivas, Assistant Vice President of Financial Research and Senior Equity Analyst at Refco Global Research, tells you why stock index futures may be the better investment choice than ETFs. He offers several compelling reasons to consider including stock index futures in your investment strategy instead of, or in addition to ETFs, if you haven't already. These include the ease of short positions, the potential for greater capital efficiency and tax benefits, the power of leverage, and greater liquidity.

An ETF is basically a portfolio, or basket, of stocks which cover a market index or equity sector. ETFs can be viewed as a substitute for or competitor to mutual funds. The most popular ETFs are the Nasdaq 100® Tracking Stock (QQQQ), S&P 500® Depositary Receipts (SPY), DIAMONDS® (DIA) and iShares Russell 2000® (IWM). You can trade stock index futures products that mirror all four -S&P 500 futures, Nasdaq 100 futures, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures and Russell 2000 futures. Join Kalivas and find out more about these popular vehicles, compare and contrast them -and decide for yourself!

Mind Over Markets: Part Two With Dr. Alexander Elder

Apr 19, 2005 3:30 p.m. CDT

In part two of "Mind Over Markets," Dr. Elder discussed the psychology of crowd behavior, and what you can do to avoid the mistakes of the masses when trading. He emphasized traders should not chase a market top or bottom, but look for signals in the charts to indicate real vs. false breakouts. Analyzing recent moves in markets including the Dow Jones Industrial Average and euro futures, Elder demonstrated when the markets had fooled many with false highs or lows, and how to use MACD analysis to help determine the real underlying trends.

Elder stressed the importance of looking at multiple timeframes when trying to determine real verses false breakouts. He also offered wisdom for traders to avoid making panicky mistakes and recommends formulating a plan during times you aren't trading -then sticking to it when you are. Elder also stressed the importance of taking good notes of all your ideas and trades, even when they didn't go your way. While you may not achieve the goal of making money every time, you will in time become a better trader with this approach. "Learn from your own experience. If you keep improving as a trader, the money will follow," he said.

Mar 29, 2005 3:30 p.m. CST

Lind-Waldock welcomed renowned author, trader and psychiatrist Dr. Alexander Elder on March 29, 2005, for part one of a two-part webinar, "Mind Over Markets." Elder shared some insights into how he uses technical analysis to make his trading decisions, and gave his views on what he sees for several financial and commodity futures markets. He analyzed daily and weekly charts of corn, wheat and soybeans and indicated what traders might look for to determine whether a new bullish phase was likely to stick--and when to place trades. He also analyzed financial futures markets, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500. For now at least, Elder said the stock market "doesn't look too good for Mr. Bull." He also felt the U.S. dollar may be setting up to take a turn for the better after a longstanding decline. Elder also gave his impressions of crude oil and gave his short-and long-term price predictions for this volatile market.

You'll also get some tips on how Elder approaches trading from a mental standpoint. His best pieces of advice? When you get a trading idea, "take good notes" and "be peaceful when you trade." Seven Common Questions About Futures With Dan McMullin

Mar 15, 2005 12:00 p.m. CST

Dan McMullin, Lind-Waldock's former Director of Business Development, shares common questions many investors have asked about futures, and provides answers. For thousands of investors, futures are a mainstream investment. Dan stresses futures are straightforward and simple to understand, and that not knowing the basics is no reason to miss out on the potential opportunities futures markets can provide. He explains how futures differ from stocks and options and emphasizes that futures not only encompass traditional commodities such as corn or oil, but also financial markets such as stock indexes or interest rate instruments.

The seven common questions Dan focuses on in this webinar are:

1.) What exactly is a futures contract?
2.) Why do futures have different months and expirations?
3.) Aren't futures too risky for me?
4.) Don't I have to know about commodities to trade futures?
5.) I don't trade options, so why should I invest in futures?
6.) How do I decide what to trade - and when?
7.) I never short stocks, so why should I sell short in futures?
